Wheelchair lifts for decks, porches and more.
Mobility to and from a home entryway can be one of the most challenging aspects of accessibility. A wheelchair lift is often a relatively simple solution to create safe and barrier-free access between split levels.
There are two main types of residential wheelchair lifts. The deck lift or porch lift is ideal for outdoor applications and will typically have a vertical travel distance of 3-5 feet as shown in this picture. When considering this type of lift, it is important to note, construction work will usually be required to accommodate the lift installation.
A wheelchair lift will need to rest on a level concrete pad and have a sidewalk straight to the platform for easy wheelchair access. The top handrail will also need to be modified for safety to make-way for gate access to the lift.
If you look closely you will also notice the front landing side of the deck has been closed off with vertical wood panels. This is referred to a fascia wall and will provide for a smooth vertical surface as one travels up or down in the lift. Lastly the lift will need a power supply, wheelchair lifts operate off a 110-volt supply that is designed for outdoor applications.
